it's finally here, reveal day for the One Room Challenge guest participants with Linda of blog Calling It Home. the journey to make over our master bedroom started seven weeks ago. normally the projects must be completed in six weeks, but Linda graciously extended the ORC an extra week this time around.
what began as a kelly green, dated nightmare, is now a soothing, sophisticated retreat for mark and i to relax in. if you want to go back to the beginning and get caught up, that's great, or if you just want to get to the good stuff, i understand that too!
the tasks for this project included painting the walls, adding a killer wallpaper, installing a new ceiling fan, upgrading to a king size bed, new window treatments, new bedside tables and storage, new bedding, new closet systems, new door knobs (throughout the house) and styling with special touches.
the design for the room all started with a wallpaper. i had my eye on this zoffany paper for almost a year, as soon as it was released, and now i get to see it every day! i'm so in love!!!
i can't wait to show you the before and afters, so let's dive in shall we?
ah, the master bedroom before. i love green, but this is too much for even me to handle. the fan, curtain rods and wall mounted lamps had to go. at least the carpet was new and the room was a good size.
and here is my master bedroom now. so. much. better. i smile every time i walk in here!
i still can't believe this is our room now, it's such a drastic difference! the room is filled with lots of blush pink, but it's balanced by heavy doses of navy and black to keep it from being too feminine. i have a lot of favorite pieces in here, but one in particular is the vintage chest i picked up at a local shop. they lacquered it creamy white for me and it is perfect for storing extra clothes. i feel like the lines show up so much better now.
now, lots of details!
i wasn't happy with the closets yet, so i'm saving those details for a later blog post.
for now, here are my resources for this project.

i want to give a special thanks to my friend and awesome photographer erica mark for her time and talent capturing my room and all its details. we had some great laughs getting some of these shots! as always, thank you to Linda at Calling It Home for creating the ORC and allowing guests to join in, i always look forward to this and am happy to have my fifth challenge completed! thanks also to media partner house beautiful and to home love network for checking out all the projects!
thank you all for being here and following along! let's do this again next spring!
so...usually week six is the reveal week during the One Room Challenge with Linda of blog Calling It Home. this time around, she has given everyone an extra week to finish up due to those participants affected by recent natural disasters. i'm happy to report, my room is ready for its close up and the green walls are a thing of the past! i'm dying to give you a little sneak peek, but you'll have to wait until the end of this post.
first, let's talk paint. i really struggled with what color to paint my walls. because of my wallpaper, i was worried the room would become too dark if the walls were painted a dark color. i decided to pull the lighter shade from my panel fabric and chose Benjamin Moore 'chelsea gray.' i LOVE the color, it's warm and enveloping. i also wanted to paint the ceiling, so i chose Benjamin Moore 'bashful.' you really have to look at the ceiling to tell it's a different color, but during the day you get this perfect blush of color.
the closets are coming along as well. there just needs to be a little more styling, and editing if i'm being honest, so i'm spending the weekend pulling things to donate and making room for new goodies i'll actually wear.
i can't explain how excited i am to share this room with you all next week! this bedroom is one of my new favorite spaces and it's nice to have a place for mark and i to retreat to that's so 'grown up' and stylish!
head over to Calling It Home to check out the other guest participants along with the twenty featured designers. there are so many good rooms, i can't even stand it!!!
oh my goodness, it's already week 5 of the One Room Challenge with Linda of blog Calling It Home. i've had a hard time keeping up with my blog posts the past two weeks, so i'm super sorry for the lack of progress info. i've been sharing images on my instagram when i think of it and i'm so close to being finished!
so far, all of my furniture is in place, the panels are installed, the bedding should arrive any day, and i decided on our lamps. i still need to finish accessorizing for the shoot, which is happening next week! and one small thing, the room still needs to be painted! nothing like doing things in reverse, am i right?
i'm so in love with these vintage lamps and the panels are to die for! Linda graciously extended the ORC by one week, for those affected by all the natural disasters recently, and even though i don't fall into that category i'm thankful for the extra time. next week i plan to share details on the closets, as i'm frantically getting them organized as we speak!
head over to Calling It Home to check out the other guest participants and see what they're up to at week 5. we could all use support to finish strong!
hey there! it's week two of the 'One Room Challenge' with Linda of blog 'Calling It Home' and there is definitely progress! if you tuned in last week, i'm tackling our master bedroom and closets. this past week was all about closets.
i had used easy closets on a past ORC and had such a great experience, i ordered from them again. just be warned, your UPS guy is not going to like you very much. luckily i have amazing neighbors that came to my rescue and took everything inside for me! how did he think we could get inside to bring this stuff in???
moving on... my painter started by taking down all of the old storage components, then patched all the holes and finally gave each closet a fresh coat of benjamin moore 'white dove.' i think it's a vast improvement. the fleshy toned walls are all over this house, but won't be for long...
as you can see, the components have started going up and i couldn't resist hanging at least one item in the closet. i have plans for storing my jewelry that i'll share next week, as well as picking out the knobs for my drawer fronts. another main thing i need to do is decide on a paint color for the bedroom walls. who knew that would be so hard?
so that's it for this week. it seems slow i know, but things are going on behind the scenes. i did select a bed and pick out a mattress, so that's something right?
don't forget to visit Calling It Home for the other guest participants and featured designers who are working away at their rooms as well!
as i write these words, i'm thinking to myself, 'am i really going to add something else to my plate right now?' the answer is a huge YES! i wasn't planning to be a guest participant with the One Room Challenge this time around, but it's been so long since i've joined in, and we're renovating our townhouse anyway, so what's the worst that could happen? right?
for those of you that aren't familiar, the One Room Challenge happens twice a year with Linda of blog 'Calling It Home.' you basically pick a room in your home and have 6 weeks to complete it, sharing your progress along with way. there are 20 featured designers that post on wednesdays, and anyone else can be a guest participant and post progress blogs on thursdays. i have participated 4 times before in our last house, making over our guest bathroom, kids' bathroom, master lounge and master dressing room.
i struggled with what to tackle this time around, many rooms need help, but i chose to focus on our master bedroom. i already tackled the kids' bedrooms, and since i can't fit the bathrooms into a 6 week schedule, this seemed to make the most sense and would complete the upstairs living areas. take a look at where this room started, caution, it's very green!
i told you. i love green, but not in my bedroom. and what's up with the shelf above my husband's closet doors? there are a few strange details happening in this room. i will say, we already have our wallpaper up and our new ceiling fan installed; we had all of that completed with the work in the boys' rooms. it helps, but the wallpaper looks funny against the green walls!
the closets are in terrible shape and desperately need an overhaul. see what i mean?
my plan for the room...
wallpaper accent wall - done
new modern ceiling fan - done
upgrade to a king size bed with a new mattress
new bedside tables
new bedding and decorative pillows
new closet systems
new window treatments
unpack all remaining boxes and put everything in its place!
that doesn't sound too difficult right? the countdown in on, so stay tuned and follow along every thursday until the reveal on november 9th! and as always, support the featured designers and other guest participants by checking in at Calling It Home, we all need encouragement while going through this process!
